On Sunday Market in Westerpark Gasfabriek I have found a small sculpture. It was called "Lovers". Apart from delicious food samples this was the most interesting discovery of that day. The material was polished alabaster. The massing and curves give you many readings. At first glance what you notice is an abstract shape. After the title is revealed you really start to understand the object as a metaphore of two people. The beauty lies in uncertainty. Have they always been together as a single entity and have been divided only by their separate earthly bodies? This is what the natural process of modelling of the stone would suggest. But the curves suggest also an opposite direction the simple and trivial one - a discovery two bodies that grew aside of one another from one single core. When following this line of thought one starts to realize about something that has happened to the stone. The cold material is not an abstract piece anymore but at this point starts to convey life.
How much of this poetics can one bring to volumes and materials in architecture?
